bands go solo

MixerAfter Radiohead recently decided to sidestep its record label and release its new album online, allowing customers to pay on an as-they-see-fit-basis, also one-man-multi-artist wonder Trent Reznor, aka NineInchNails says goodbye to a big label.

One thing is clear: the water between artists and their representative music labels, especially in term of  their attitude with respect to the changing  world around them, the mix or recipe music – artist-entrepreneur – audience -new media – new business model, appears to be getting deeper and deeper.

While the discussion has sometimes been that direct online self-representation would work well for starting bands to gather an audience, recent moves show especially top-bands with an already established following going solo, bidding goodbye to the traditional music industry. A signal for another sector of middlemen losing ground ?
