pharma lagging behind

medicineIntel-founder and former CEO Andrew S. Grove recently critized the big pharma and medical industries for not keeping up with the pace of innovation and breakthroughs such as in the computer and chip business. Comments on whether the comparison between this industry and pharma/medicine is justifiable or not left aside, Grove’s criticism does point to the way speeds and acceleration of change and hence innovation and achievements in one sector are upping the stakes in terms of expectations in others.

In a sense one could also see it as a plea for more transdisciplinary debate, in the sense of learning from each other’s paths of change, challenges, methods, transitions etc. This goes all the way down to being aware of and questioning each other’s strategies for success, dominant patterns of thought,  paradigms, metaphors employed, etc. across disciplinary and industry sector borders.

Also in futures studies, the role and value of metaphor and transdisciplinary insight, while present (e.g. mindstretching exercises, integral thinking etc.), is currently still very much underestimated and underexploited.
