future of sexuality
The Club of Amsterdam‘s most recent theme of forward-looking focus is the future of sexuality. Among the topics that will be addressed are the evolution of moral values regarding sexuality, (new) social networking, relationships and sexuality as well as more philosophical notions of change in our perception of sexuality.
In terms of technology and sexuality, it is a well known fact that the sex-industry has been an early mover in picking up new technologies (e.g. the internet). Michael over at AcceleratingFuture foresees that the future of full-body haptic suits will significantly reshape human sexuality from a social point of view:
“More realistic cybersex with NPCs will mean that people will be less inclined to get boyfriends and girlfriend [in real life].”
In an interview about 5 years ago, Carl Djerassi, father of the contraceptive pill, foresaw an increasing split between sex for fun and sex for children. He foresees people to pursue a situation of increasing control over their lives also in biological terms, e.g. by safe-storing egg- and spermcells before getting sterilized early in life and hence have children purely on a choice-basis. In other words, forget contraception as a whole.
On the other end of the spectrum we have seen moves towards more conscious or restricted sexuality or even abstinence under the influence of subcultures such as the straight-edge (sXe) ‘movement’ popular among punk-and-hardcore-music loving youngsters, or religious groups.
