matters of the heart

heartbeatScientists at the University of Minnesota ‘built’ a bioartificial, human heart, from the ground up and got it to beat.

“By using a process called whole organ decellularization, scientists from the University of Minnesota Center for Cardiovascular Repair grew functioning heart tissue by taking dead rat and pig hearts and reseeding them with a mixture of live cells.”

Developments like these and others in the area of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, open up possibilities for radical innovation in the area of surgery and healthcare in general. “No more ‘plumbing’, bring your own cells and we’ll grow you a new one” … seems to be the core message from our medical future.
