In 2004 Essent had the ambition to make its efforts regarding CSR more visible, for the purpose of devoting more energy to it in the future. The company decided to develop a vision and strategy on CSR, together with Pantopicon and Sustain.

Together with a taskforce of Essent and managers from several divisions of the company, Pantopicon held a series of workshops to enhance people's understanding of the background of CSR and to develop a vision and strategy on CSR for the company. It was decided to focus on different roles of the company. The next step was to specify a series of social issues per role that Essent could and should focus on in its CSR strategy. After all, CSR implies that a company should contribute to solving - and where possible preventing - current and future negative social issues.

The taskforce formulated a level of ambition for each of the roles and issues, to be reached by 2010. In the final phase of the project the ambitions were translated into a solid, tangible CSR strategy and policyplan for the organization.
